Can the eBook Compete With the Apple iPad's Bite?

After the big introduction of the Apple iPad, addicts are still pacing the floor waiting until they can get their hands on this device. The WiFi models are expected to be shipped in late March and the 3G models will be shipped in April. It’s no surprise, a person who uses Apple products are a different kind, unique and have stayed devout to the Apple. So Steve Jobs is still doing his job, coming up with a product that will be flying off the shelves no doubt. Perhaps devotees will meander in long lines at their local Apple Store for the iPad to go on sale, reminiscent of the iPhone release. With all of the hype surrounding the iPad, will it destroy the popularity of other e-readers like the Kindle and Sony Readers? In order to come to a conclusion, let’s take a look at the iPad closely.

It’s not cheap with prices starting at $499 and top out at $829, and why wouldn’t it be? The iPad isn’t just a reader. It looks like an over-sized iPhone that can’t dial out. You can watch high-def movies, TV, browse the web and play games. The humongous 9.7 inch IPS touch screen stays true to Apple standards with clarity, and comes with a capacity of 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive.

This device will obviously hold a library much larger than another e-reader, and is coolly displayed on a “book shelf”. You can just tap the book you want, and enjoy a high-resolution, LED backlit screen. It also runs special apps created for the iPad, and also most of the 140,000 applications from the App store.

Here’s the problem. The iPad will only be connected to Apple’s own e-book store, and these books are not compatible with the Kindle or other e-book market dominators. If you have an ample collection of e-books already on another e-reader, you aren’t going to be able to access them on the iPad. While it’s still not confirmed as yet, rumor has it that iBooks are going to sell for $12.99 and $14.99.

The Apple iPad is portable, light-weight, and probably really fun to use, but if you don’t need all of the “other stuff”, the e-readers on the market now do just fine. But if you are a hardcore Apple fanatic, then Jobs and his staff have manufactured yet another brilliant product for his group. With fantastic clarity and capabilities, you will “iLove” this multi-tasking gadget. It will fit perfectly next to your MacBook Pro, AirPort Express, Magic Mouse and iPhone.

While the Apple iPad is a truly revolutionary device that’s in a class all its own, it’s unlikely to replace the Amazon Kindle as the top ebook reading device in the market.
